Welcome to the James Alva Hendricks Family Blog

Throughout my life I have always been proud to be a Hendricks and to know so many of you. I have tried to live up to those who have gone before us, sacrificing so much so we could live where we live and have the things we have. We are all blessed with such a rich family history, preceded by so many people. This blog is a place where we can collect and share favorite family pictures, stories and memories of who we are. Please feel free to visit as often as possible and if there are things you want to add or correct, please contact any of the contributors listed on the right side panel. Desmond Tutu once said, "You don't choose your family. They are God's gift to you, as you are to them. Let us take the time and remember ours together. Mike

James Hendricks Photos/Second batch

I finally developed the second batch of old negatives from
Grandpa's tin box. This batch was a lot more worn and
scratched than the first but considering some of them were
taken in the 1930's- It's amazing they look this good.
If anyone knows how to photoshop the scratches
and/or make the images a little clearer,
I would be happy to email them to you to work on.
(Does anyone know who is in the photo with Grandpa?)

My mom now has the remainder of the negatives which
are mostly scenery and other events from the Pocatello area.
(trains, planes, track and field races, etc)
We will continue to add them in the coming months as
they are developed so everyone can enjoy them.
(Above photo: Colleen in her Easter dress)
(Below photo: not sure? possibly Grandpa?
The sign says Leader How Co. American Falls Idaho)
The remainder of the photos(below)
are of James and Ione.
I assume during their courtship in the early 1930's.

(My mom told me today that they would often go to
Craters of the Moon and explore the caves on ropes.
We wondered if the photo of Grandpa
standing on the mountain of rocks was taken there.)

Grandpa's Old Tin Box

Many of the photos that you see on the blog today came from
a stack of negatives that were found inside an old tin box that
belonged to Grandpa.  He kept a collection of family histories,
obituaries, church records and these priceless negatives inside it.
We wanted everyone to be able to enjoy the photos
and read all the histories that he kept for so many years.
There are still around 50 negatives that we'll be developing
and adding to the blog in the weeks and months to come.
Once we get them all printed, I would be happy to
make a disc for anyone who wants a copy.

Memories of Grandpa

Jeanne Sue: "I remember Grandpa filling the skating
rink.  We would go ice skating and have hot Chocolate
at Grandma and Grandpa's."

Jody: "I remember how much Grandpa loved his
animals.  Once we went to Merrydale Park to go
feed the horses."

Jim: "I remember one time I got a flat tire in Arimo
and my tire broke.  Grandpa came and helped me
get my tire changed."

Julie: "I remember after Grandma died, I was at
Grandpa's house admiring a Christmas cactus.
Grandpa said "I've got a plant in the other room that
always blooms."  It turned out to be a silk plant!"

James: "I remember when we went to Grandpa's to
chop wood and what a wonderful time we had just
talking and visiting him."

Erick: "My favorite time with Grandpa would have to
be when we would go over and chop wood for the
winter.  To know that I was doing something for him
and with him."

Bill: "I remember going hunting with Grandpa. I loved
sleeping over with Grandpa and not being able to go
to sleep.  at 2:00AM Grandpa would come in and say
"If you don't go to sleep, you won't be able to go hunting."

Erin: "I remember going hunting with Grandpa and all his
energy and endurance and how much he enjoyed it."

Kara: "I remember Grandpa taking me to ride the horses."

Stacey: "Grandpa was the best fisherman because he
always seemed to have the biggest fish.  I also remember
how proud he was of his tomatoes.  I really appreciated
the birthday cards he sent every year."

Jonathan: "Grandpa always remembered to send a
birthday card."

Jeremy:"One time we were at a family reunion and
Grandpa remembered my birthday and gave me a
birthday card."

Darrin:  " Grandpa was a kind, good-hearted man.
One of my special memories is about the day I learned
how caring he could be.  We had decided to go fishing
for the day on the Blackfoot River.  As Grandpa powered
the LTD toward the river, we passed a hitchhiker on the
road.  We promptly pulled over and the stranger galloped
toward the car with his bag.  Being only 11 or 12 years old,
this alarmed me because the man running toward the car
resembled Charles Manson and I had no idea what his
idea of a ride was.  Grandpa was calm when he turned
to me and said "Anyone can be down on their luck, and
it won't hurt us to help him out."  The man got in, my fear
slipped away, and we learned that the stranger was a
good fellow.  We pulled into Blackfoot a few minutes
later and stopped outside a restaurant to say goodbye
to our passenger.  He thanked us for the ride, and before
he could walk away I saw Grandpa slip him a folded bill
and say '"It's almost time for lunch."  The stranger walked
away and as we drove on I thought I saw a twinkle in
Grandpa's eye that can only come from goodwill."

Deon: "I remember riding Peanuts and Red with
Grandpa out at Mom and Dad's house."

Brian: "I remember going over to Grandpa's
and how proud he was of his giant tomatoes."

Jason: "My most favorite memory of Grandpa is of all the
times we went to help chop and stack wood at his house."

David: "Grandpa gave me my first fly fishing rod,
I will always remember him every time I use it."

Shawn:  "I remember during the winter we would
go to Merrydale Park and Grandpa would saddle
the horses and tie a rope from the saddle horn to
our sleds and pull us around the pasture.
Grandpa was famous for tricking us when we went
fishing by getting a bite and handing the pole over to us
without letting us know that there was a fish on the other
end. I will always remember Grandpa's fishing lessons."
Mike: "I remember driving around with Grandpa
and listening to his stories about growing up."

Keri: "I remember riding in the top of Grandpa's Camper
when we would go camping.  I also remember Grandpa
always having sugar cubes in his pocket to feed the
horses whenever we would go see them."
Jamie: "Mostly I remember going fishing with Grandpa
and how much he enjoyed taking us fishing."

Connie: "I loved going to the World Fair in Spokane
Washington and sliding down the animal shaped slides
and Grandpa catching me at the bottom."

Michelle:  "Having Mickey Mouse pancakes with Grandpa
at 4:00 in the morning and going to Disneyland.  He always
cared about the little things."

Nick: "I love listening to Grandpa tell stories.  He didn't
always get the names or the details right, but I always
understood what he was trying to say.  I wish I could have
heard more of them. I also loved to eat the vegetables out of
his garden.  They were the best vegetables that I had ever seen:
His tomatoes were the biggest, his cucumbers were the best and
his rhubarb were the sourest.  I remember sitting at his house
when I was a kid, hour after hour, waiting for the bird in the clock
to come out.  I tried to shoot it with my little toy gun,
but to this day I never have hit that bird.  I will miss his stories,
his vegetables, and the bird in the clock.  I will miss my Grandpa."
